Savannah State University officials announced that 26 faculty members will be fired and not returning for the 2019-2020 academic year due to budget cuts, resulting from declining student enrollment.

Savannah State student enrollment has declined over the past two years. In 2017, there was a 10.6 percent decline in student enrollment; in Fall 2018, there was a a 7.9 percent decline in student enrollment.

“While we have taken some interim measures to address the loss of revenue, such as eliminating vacant positions and placing restrictions on new hires, these are not sustainable options given the budgetary circumstances,” a statement from President Dozier’s letter.

Majority of the faculty will be cut from the Social Sciences department where Africana Studies was threatened to be taken away.  Since enrollment has declined for two consecutive years, this means a decrease in tuition, fee and state-allocated revenue causing a budget reduction for our current fiscal year, 2019.
